$ 4 Million Washington Square Park Comfort Station Approved

Relief is on the way at Washington Square Park.

Plans for a new $4 million comfort station, clad in translucent glass, granite and topped with a trelise of salvaged Ipe wood, were approved yesterday by the Landmarks Preservation Commission, according to the New York Post.

The new comfort station, part of a "park house" that will also include room for Parks Department staff, will replace three older buildings, including a run-down restroom on the southern edge of the park.

As part of the final phase of the park's reconstruction, work on the comfort station is expected to begin in early 2011 and last one year, a Parks Department spokeswoman said.

The city has spent roughly $30 million so far on a complete, and controversial, makeover of the park, including the relocation of its signature fountain.
